Everyone knows Texans love their guns. But some lawmakers took it a step too far last spring as they attempted to pass legislation that would allow concealed handguns on college campuses.
Last spring break, I made it to the capitol for the hearing on the “Guns on Campus” law. Over the two-hour period when I listened to teachers, students, police officers, and other Austinites speak, I heard only ONE person in favor of the bill. Of course, Austin isn’t like the rest of Texas, but it should be noted that it also houses the LARGEST university in the state.
Private schools were to be given the option of whether or not to allow guns on campus, but public schools were going to be forced. Fortunately, our fine president here at UT, Bill Powers, rejected the idea of allowing guns on campus. After all, who thinks guns in the hands of a bunch of angst-y and overworked juniors and seniors is a good idea?
The majority of Republicans in the Texas State Senate and our very own Rick Perry. Thank goodness the bill died out in May when senators started to realize their constituencies were pissed about the bill.
But I am here to warn the rest of the country, Perry’s favorite amendment is the 2nd!
