Education: Not exactly Texas’ strong suit.
And Rick Perry isn’t exactly helping. I attended a “Save Our Schools” (S.O.S.) rally at the capitol last March when Perry and the Texas legislature was proposing deep cuts. I wasn’t the only one; THOUSANDS of Texans from over 300 school districts drove to Austin for the big event. (Lucky me, I live within walking distance of the capitol!)
Fortunately, this August Perry gave up on the (unrealistic) idea that Texas public schools could survive without the state funding provided by the rainy day fund. I mean really, what ELSE were we going to use that money for? It seems we were just hoarding it for something big. Clearly, education doesn’t register as BIG on Rick Perry’s scale.
NOTE: I am implying that a President Perry would not put education first either.
These statistics make me feel absolutely depressed about my education:
California has nine nationally recognized research institutions; New York has seven; Pennsylvania has four; while Texas, the second most populous state in the nation, has only three.
Texas is #49 in verbal SAT scores in the nation (493) and #46 in average math SAT scores (502).
